Do You Need a Licence to Build a Sauna in Queensland?
What Queensland law actually requires for a home sauna build — QBCC licensing thresholds, electrical work, building approvals and why kit importers are not builders.

Do You Need a Licence to Build a Sauna in Queensland?
Short answer: for almost every permanent home sauna, yes — the work must be carried out or supervised by a licensed builder, and the electrical work must be done by a licensed electrical contractor.
Where the licensing line sits
In Queensland, building work valued above the QBCC threshold must be carried out by a licensed contractor. A custom sauna involves framing, insulation, waterproofing, cladding and fixed electrical supply — that is building work, not furniture assembly. We hold QBCC licence #15463679 and carry full insurance on every job.
Electrical work is never DIY
A traditional sauna heater draws serious current. Smaller HUUM units run single phase; 8kW and above generally need three phase. Only a licensed electrical contractor can install the circuit, the heater and the controller. An unlicensed install can void your home insurance.
When you also need building approval
We handle the approvals process as part of the build so you are not chasing councils.
Why "kit importer" is not the same as "builder"
Plenty of sauna sellers in Queensland import a flat-pack cabin and drop it on site. They are not licensed to frame, waterproof or connect it to your house, and the warranty usually covers the box, not the installation. A licensed builder is accountable for the whole thing — structure, moisture, ventilation and finish.
The practical checklist
1. Ask for the QBCC licence number and check it online.
2. Ask who does the electrical work and for their licence.
3. Confirm whether building approval applies to your site.
4. Get the waterproofing and ventilation detail in writing.
5. Confirm insurance cover for the value of the work.
If you are planning a sauna on the Sunshine Coast, in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast, we can tell you within one conversation exactly which approvals your site needs.
